Pastor Christell graduated from The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and was ordained in 1983. His was first called to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in rural Arenzville, Illinois. In 1990 he accepted the call to Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield, Illinois where he continues to serve.
Pastor Christell has served the youth of Historic Grace and the Central/Southern Illinois Synod for many years, and youth ministry remains one of his priorities. Pastoral Care, preaching and teaching are very important to him as he continues to follow God’s call to Word and Sacrament ministry.
“J.B.” stands for “John Brian.” JB was born and raised in Butte, Montana, at 6,000 feet elevation in the northern Rockies. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Wheaton College, and his Master of Music degree from Indiana University (where he met his wife, Connie), and has been in the Midwest ever since.
Connie is also a church musician and Lutheran school educator at Our Saviors in Springfield. The George family lived in Valparaiso, Indiana from 1998-2013, where their four children were born: Thomas, Katie, Christopher, and Brian. While there, JB served various churches and also worked at Valparaiso University, teaching organ lessons, playing for services at the Chapel of the Resurrection, and directing the University Singers. The George family moved to Springfield in 2013. JB is thankful to be at Historic Grace and is privileged to lead the singing of God’s people at Historic Grace!
